In Peru, approximately 1.2 million households do not have electricity, this represents almost a quarter of the population. Reaching these communities presents serious logistical and financial challenges due to the difficult geography and large amounts of investment needed for grid extension. In order to meet current and future demands, Peru is pursuing several approaches in their energy policy: taking advantage of abundant natural resources, promoting energy efficiency and developing innovative solutions with alternative technology. LUTW recognizes these goals and the progress Peru is making but at the same time, addressing the gap – communities too small, remote or difficult to be included in those plans.
LUTW is applying the knowledge and experience gained from projects in other countries using appropriate renewable energy systems in conjunction with high-efficiency lighting to initiate development projects in isolated and neglected areas of Peru. By focusing our efforts in certain regions, we hope to magnify the benefits of job creation, local partner development, ongoing training opportunities, business development and creating networks of renewable energy communities.
Since October 2010, the Regional Office team has been actively engaged with networking, gathering data on communities, understanding the bureaucracy of Peru, meeting with local renewable energy actors, participating in conferences and seminars and executing our first projects. Peru has been incredibly interesting and the team prefers the project sites to sitting behind the computer any day!
