Project Background
In the aftermath of Tsunami that hit coast of Sri Lanka December
2004, Light Up The World (LUTW) received a direct appeal from
Sarvodaya, one of the largest NGOs in Sri Lanka, to supply
LUTW lighting systems for the refugee camps they werebuilding.
LUTW answered the call and raised $130,000+USD in donations by
individuals and corporations to supply lighting systems for inhabitants
of the refugee camps.
LUTW enlisted the services of a
local Colombo electronics company Crystal Electronics to manufacture
and test 2000 WLED lightingsystems based on LUTW's current system
design. LUTW contributed the WLEDs, electronic components, circuit
designs and technical support.
Method of Implementation
Swiss / Canadian René Scalabrini was hired by LUTW to
act as the project manager, overseeing the manufacturing, assembly
and installation of systems in the refugee camps. Many international
and local volunteers were involved in the project. Sarvodaya
helped by providing the financial and logistical support for
the installation of the first 1000 systems.
Long Term Vision
LUTW would like to help create commercial links to supply the
surrounding area and LUTW projects with lighting equipment on
a long term basis.
