Tibetan Orphanage in China
Orphanage Project
We are developing a project that will bring our lighting systems
to children living in a Tibetan orphanage. The orphanage provides
a home and an education for children who are destitute or parentless.
The orphanage compound is located just west of the Tibetan town
of Zaduo, 14,500 feet above sea level in the middle of an open
plain in the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province,
China.
The orphanage is presently lit with a few
fluorescent lights however they are powered by an expensive
and unreliable generator. The
generator is used mainly to generate electricity for a small
fridge which houses a few medical supplies, which must be kept
cool. The lights are a drain on the generator and are
not able to be used regularly because of the high cost.
LUTW will replace the current lighting system (or lack thereof)
in this orphanage with specially engineered and installed lighting
systems for these specific structures. Our systems are more effective
and robust providing bright energy efficient light which the
children can read and study by at night. Solar powered light
is emission free and does not pose the risk of fire and injury
without the need for expensive kerosene purchases.
Our
team has completed a technical assessment of the orphanage and
the orphanage staff has earnestly expressed their need and desire
for this project. The current budget will cover the expenses
of purchasing, shipping, and installing the lighting systems
at the orphanage. Lama Gyurmey Rinpoche has asked us to
provide additional power for computers for the school children. In
response to his request we are installing larger solar panels
so they have additional capacity to provide electricity for more
than just the lighting systems. In addition we will train
local people as electrical technicians to repair and replace
components should it be required. The impact of LUTW’s
installation will be reported and disseminated to donors.
Our Long Term Vision
Develop a safe and sustainable solution for the orphanage in
order to improve the level of education, and improve the economic
future for the operation of the orphanage.
